[Poems], [mid 18th century].

Manuscript, in a single hand, with some corrections and additions, of a collection of several hundred lighthearted and comical poems, many of them occasional. Titles include Epitaph on an old woman married to a young man; Verses printed off while the author was shewing some ladies the printing house at Oxford 1721; The fly painted by a young lady on the Revd. Dr. B's spectacles; To Colley Cibber; and Of the American dispute. Many of the occasional poems are to, or about, Mira, including To Mira setting twice for her picture, to the tune of the Play of Love; and To Mira, occasioned by her presenting a firescreen worked with flowers. At the end of the manuscript are several later poems in a different hand.

Phanuel Bacon (1700-1783) was a Church of England clergyman and writer. In addition to his clerical duties, Bacon wrote heroic ballads, including The Kite, an epic poem concerning the Jacobite plot, as well as numerous satirical and comical plays, including The Moral Quack, The Insignificants, The Tryal of the Time Killers, The Occulist, and The Taxes.
